Adding Facebook Open Graph on own Website

I added a Facebook Like Button with Open Graph to this website today.  When I tried out the button in with my own Facebook account I was getting the wrong picture and description sent to my profile page - it was taking the site main title, description and the first image it came to.  It appears this is due to Facebook caching and you can simply update what it has cached by running your page through the Facebook URL Linter and then it updates the information in the posts.

How to add an app to your Facebook fanpage

Facebook are removing fan pages from apps on 1st February 2012 so I need to move the existing fan page for our game "Odd Socks" to a new Brand/Product page as an app. The Welcome tab I'd previously made did not move across, so I had to make make an app with an iFrame showing the page I wanted as my Welcome landing page.

There was no "Add to my page" link as there had been previously so I found this word around, click on the link to see how it works for my page then substitute your app_id and and landing page url.  I hope this helps.

Getting the app to run on your iPhone

Running apps on the simulator in XCode is fairly straightforward but there's more to running the app on the iPhone itself than simply plugging it in.

If you do simply plug it in, then the option to run on device appears, and is the default. Sadly nothing happens when you run the app from XCode though.

The missing ingredient is a digital signature, required for all apps that run on the iPhone. You need to get one of these for each application that you create - you can do this by logging it to your iPhone developer account at http://developer.apple.com/iphone and clicking iPhone provisioning portal which currently is the first option on the right hand side. Follow the instructions given there. If all goes well then that is it. Sadly for me, it didn't!

User name or passphrase you entered is incorrect

I got this error during the first step, attempting to request a certificate. There is little information about this error message, and it is pretty cryptic as I didn't enter either of these things during this process, or in fact ever on the iMac!! The apparent problem is a corrupt file, and the solution is to remove it and reboot your iMac. This worked for me and allowed me to complete this step and move swiftly on to the next problem! However, I advise extreme caution in doing this, especially if you have existing certificates on the system. Backup the file first!!

Remove the file ~/Library/preferences/com.apple.security.plist

A valid signing identity matching this profile could not be found in your keychain

This beauty of an error message pops up in XCode Organiser when installing the application provision key created in the previous step. Now maybe I missed something (it was late last night and a beer assisted session so that is quite possible, if not highly likely) but I didn't see anything about this step in the process, and I had to scrape around some forums and try a few things to find this answer:

On the iphone provisioning portal (see above for getting there) click Certificates on the left, and then the Development tab and then the download button next to your application name.

This will download the file developer_identity.cer. Locate this file, and drag it (kicking and screaming presumably) into the Keychain Access window. (You are running this of course? If not, find it in Applications/Utilities). I dragged it onto the login keychain on the left hand side of the window and this worked for me, though it may not be the best place for it.

In XCode build/run your app and hopefully it will now appear on your phone!!

Where's the # key gone?

As the first step in our move to iPhone development we've bought an iMac and we're getting to grips with the new development environment pretty quickly.

The iMac itself is a new experience for us too. It is uber-stylish compared to our old black box PCs and the "Magic Mouse" is amazing. I had initial doubts about the very small keyboard and had to be reassured that I could plug in a "normal" USB alternative if I wanted. I shouldn't have worried though, despite it's small size the aluminium (note the correct spelling, all those west of the Atlantic) keyboard has standard pitch keys and the limited depth of travel isn't a problem.

The only issue arose when I tried to type "#import" for the first time and couldn't find the # key. After a couple of minutes of looking, and then trying key combinations, I found it on alt-3. I guess this only applies to the UK keyboard, as the £ symbol is on shift-3 and displayed on the key.
